Frequently Asked Questions

What is paint-your-own-pottery?

Paint-your-own-pottery is one of the easiest and most rewarding art experiences you can have! You'll decorate pre-fired ceramic pieces with special pottery paints, then we'll fire them in our kiln to create a finished, durable piece you can actually use. Not only do you get something practical and beautiful, but you'll also make amazing memories that'll put a smile on your face for years to come!

I've never painted pottery before - will I mess it up?

Not a chance! Our Paint Associates are basically creativity superheroes - they're here to help get any idea out of your head and onto your pottery. Need help with color choices? We've got you. Want to try cool techniques like bubbles, tape, stencils, or sponges? We'll show you how. No artistic experience required - just bring your enthusiasm!

How long should I plan to paint?

Most people spend 1-2 hours painting, but there's absolutely no time limit! Whether you're a quick sketch artist or a detailed perfectionist, paint at whatever pace makes you happy. We've had people finish in 30 minutes and others who paint for 4 hours - both approaches are totally fine! We know some people will have a snack and conversation while they paint and others are right down to business :)

When can I pick up my finished pottery?

Your piece goes through quite the journey after you leave! We shelf it in order, then glaze it (only half at a time with 24 hours drying between halves). The glaze looks blue but turns clear after firing - don't worry, it's supposed to do that! Then we load the kiln like a giant 3D puzzle, fire it at 1830°F , and let it cool completely. The whole process typically takes 5-7 days, and we'll call you when it's ready!

Is my finished pottery safe to eat from?

Absolutely! All our glazes are food-safe, so go ahead and use that plate for dinner or drink your morning coffee from your painted mug. Your finished piece will be dishwasher and microwave safe too, though super high microwave temperatures might cause cracks that let water in.

How much should I budget for my visit?

You'll pay a $10 studio fee per painter - think of it as your all-access pass to our paint bar with unlimited paints, brushes, tools, and professional glazing and kiln firing. Then pick your pottery piece (most range from $12-$35), and you're all set for the full creative experience and a beautiful finished piece to take home.
